I have a bird bath in my garden which is made of stone. The previous owner had painted the inside of the bath and the paint is now chipped. This makes the bath difficult to clean as the paint chips off and I worry about the birds who use it. I was planing to repaint it and I wanted to know if there is a paint that is recommended to use for this which is friendly to birds and might be less likely to chip? Or would it be a better plan just to take off all of the old paint and leave it as plain stone?
Thank you :)
I dont know of a paint specific for bird use, but masonary paint such as Sandtex is water based and I would imagine it would be pretty innert once dry, however it may only last for a couple of seasons before it starts to come off on a bird bath.
Thank you very much for your advice! Its worth a try and if it doesn't last long I might just take all the paint off instead and leave it plain :)
try to get a bitumen based paint it comes in a gloss enamel finish but the shine dies down qiuckly.i worked with scottish water we used it at all water treatment plants for pipes( inside and out)pretty much anywhere water went,it meets all health regs so good enough for us good for the birds, probably last longer than masory paint too
For coating bird baths we usually recommend the use of a lead-free enamel paint, which you should be able to get from most good hardwear stores or even some hobby shops.

Hi Catherine
A good post and a lot of suggestions to work off with painting stone. Thank you for bringing up the question
I think I will have the same issue as yourself as I am moving to a garden that has a stone birdbath and it is looking worst for wear now

Thanks for all the suggestions I'll be sure to try them out.
