A big black bird has fallen down my chimney (for the third year running!) Think it may be a jackdaw. We blocked the chimney with some wood near the bottom this year, luckily, and have just returned from a couple of days away to hear the noise of a bird stuck in there. Have got it out, but it seems to have injured it's wing and is bleeding.
I have put it in a bucket in the garden (on the table) with some leaves and straw and left some water and bird seed in the bucket.
Hopefully it will be OK and if it's still alive in the morning - any advice as to what to do next?

If this bird has a damaged wing that is bleeding and it can't fly then I suggest it might need some medical help.

There was a report in our local paper recently about problems with jackdaws and chimneys. They do like to nest in them, which is very dangerous for them, not to say inconvenient for the house owner. The advice given to stop this happening in future years is simply to buy a chimney pot guard and have it mounted over the top of your chimney. The chimney can still be used by the house owner, but the birds can't nest in the top of it.
As for your injured bird I can't add anything to what Woodpecker has said. Good luck, and I hope he is OK.

Most likely a jackdaw. Depending on how it is tomorrow, where you are, and whether it's a youngster or adult, it may need to go to a vet, RSPCA, or better still a local wildlife hospital (http://www.uksafari.com/wildlifehospitals.htm) to recover.
