Blackbirds

How long do blackbirds live? We have one that has been coming in to the garden for about four years now. It has a deformed beak so is easily recognisable (unless this is hereditary and this is its offspring).

  • Hi G'Mac - a belated welcome to the forum - blackbirds live, on average, for around 3 and a half years - but this obviously depends on the environment they live in, predation and food and shelter availability. The oldest blackbird recorded however was almost 22 years old! It's very possible that this blackbird is the same one.

  • Hi LRB,

This appears to tie in with the bird. Last year it was looking pretty wabbit and we didn't expect it to survive. It has been around this year but isn't as dominant as before. A younger pair seem to have taken over the territory and chase it off whenever it appears. It does seem to have raised a brood though as we have seen it carry off food.

    Thanks again for the info.

    G'Mac.
