Bullfinches and Goldfinches

This is the very first year I have had both Bullfinches and Goldfinches still visiting my feeding station on a daily basis so late in the year.  I am sure that other years they have ceased to visit by about April.  Can anyone tell me if it Is normal to have them so late in the year?

Best regards, Lots2live4, John.

  • Hi lots2 live4

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy it here.

I don't see bullfinches at all unfortunately but goldfinches are still regular visitors to my feeders although not so numerous as in the winter and early spring. They always seem to come in pairs so I suspect they are nesting locally. As usual they go for the sunflower hearts and nyger seed. Just enjoy them.

    Regards TJ

  • Hi Lots2live4,

    Welcome to the forum.

Like TJ I don't see any bullfinches, but I still have a few goldfinches on my feeders. The numbers have dropped since the breeding season started, but I have 2 pairs of regulars who come and go all day.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi lots2live4,

I've never had Bullfinches in the garden (have seen them on the walkway back of the house though) and have Goldfinches visiting in a pair.  Although only have one at the moment so assuming the other is sitting on eggs.

You're lucky to be seeing Bullfinches in your garden.  Hope they stick around :o)

  • Hi
I have had Bullfinches, Goldfinches and Greenfinches all year so they must stick around if they are getting what they like. I also have a baby greenfinch this year

  • We have a regular pair of Bullfinches, but they always vanish for a while when the fruit trees on the fruit farms start budding, which is what they love to eat. Goldfinches are always here.

  • Hi, I have a pair of bullfinches that visit me sporadically throughout the year (although they are more willing to turn up during the winter). I have goldfinches year-round, and plenty of them too, which is lovely!

  • Thanks for your reply TJ.  Sorry to learn that you do not have any Bullfinches.  They are such handsome birds.

I wish now that in my original question I had asked for anyone replying to include the area in which they live.  In that way I would have been able to build up more of a picture of their haunts.

    Hope to speak again sometime.

    Best regards, Lots2live4, John.

  • Ho Lots

I have my very first goldfinch in the garden last week, so don't know if late or early but great to see.

  • Hi lots2live4 (great ID!)

    Welcome to the forum :-))

I don't think I've ever seen a bullfinch either, but there are goldfinches here.

The numbers seem to be growing at the moment. I assume the pair are bringing their newly fledged youngsters to feed on the nyger seeds.

Isn't it funny how some fledgelings can just start straight off feeding themselves, while starlings have to make such a loud song and dance about being out of the nest?

    Best wishes Chris
