We live in a residential area, where I am gradually managing to encourage birds to our garden. There are various trees in the neigbourhood and we attract the following birds; wren, robin, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, sparrow, starling, blackbird, collared dove, goldfinch, but which of these, if any, has a repetitive call which sounds like a squeaky bike pump?
Yours in Nature, Alba
Hi Alba
That will probably be the goldfinch.
Check out bird songs on the RSPB here: http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/a/index.aspx
Best wishes Chris

It sounds like it could be a Great Tit - although if you are really lucky it might be a Bullfinch as their song sounds a lot like a creaking gate. Starlings are fabulous mimics as well - you don't have a neighbour that regularly pumps up their back tyre do you?!

Hi-
sounds like a Great Tit actually :)

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides, binoculars, scopes, tripods, etc - put 'Birding Tips' into the search box
Sorry to give you yet another answer (i think between all the people who have relied we've almost covered all the birds you have named!) But - i have a robin which makes a squeaky bike pump noise! Quite a quiet high pitched squeak lasting a probably 1-2 seconds... it will make this sound for quite long periods of time... good luck identifying it!!!
If it's a regular two note "tsee-saw" then I'd go for great tit as well. Have listen to this to see what you think.

Thank you all.....
From listening to the recommended bird call sites, I now have the dilemma of it, possibly being either the Great or Coal tit. It was amusing reading through the combination of replies, thank you again.
I have had a delightful afternoon of watching 4 baby sparrows being fed and, one male great tit foraging under the poppies. His visits were frequent and not very far between. Then my daughter arrived home and said that there had been a visit from a pair of coal tits this morning.
Hmmm, I'll keep you posted
Well done to all those who correctly suggested - Great tit.
It now appears that there is a nest nearby and all ranges of the call are being displayed. Using binoculars I spied two young and at least one parent is coming to and fro for food from our garden. Yippee:)
That's great news. It's also always nice to be able to confirm an ID. Keep a look out for fledglings over the next week or so.
This is one of mine from last year looking suitably bewildered to be in the big wide world.
Regards TJ
Hi,
one of the old english names for great tit was Saw-sharpener because of that song :)
I wonder if there are any books on Old or local names for our garden and woodland birds?
