we live in a converted barn . we also have outbuildings where 4 or5 pairs of swallows are nesting as normal but we have this 1 swallow that insists on spending most of its time in our kitchen watching TV. My question is could its ancestors have nested here 40 years ago when it was said barn? we love our swallows but we do need to shut him/her out at night. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Hi kingy
Welcome to the forum. Excellent! I'm sorry I'm no help at all, but just think your post is so funny, I love the fact that you have a swallow coming in to watch TV. Sorry if it isn't ideal for you! I hope you get your answer soon :-)
Regards
Kerry

Oh dear!!! What is his favourite programme? Birds of a Feather?
How brilliant to have such a wonderful guest in your house. I have no idea how to answer your question, but like Kezmo, I think your story is so funny!!
Any photos?
Cheers, Linda.

I don't know the answer but how brilliant to have this happening in your own home. I would love to see a photograph.
Hi Kesmo
Thanks for your reply. I am very new to this forum lark but it seems good fun.You find my post funny, you ought to be here ,the swallow is bringing it's mates in now.It watched Eggheads earlier . I have taken some photos but dont know how to send them on. To be serious thou I hope it isn't trying to nest in the kitchen ,love them as we do thats one step too far. Now it has gone dark it has gone elsewhere. Thats what is strange it just likes coming in and doesn't mind us even to the point of using the flash for the photos. Is it going to try and nest,I suppose it's watch this space.
Perhaps he is trying to audition for this years Robertson Juice drink ad. They could well be returning to their roots, but it must be so entertaining to see.
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain
If it's a recent conversion then Swallows might still consider your home as theirs. I got used to watching Swallows perching outside my bedroom for ages but desperately needed my roof fixed. I mean fixed. Falling apart. The Swallows don't perch anymore but they are still around and I was sat in an outhouse, two days ago, having a cigarette and a Swallow flew in and saw me and flew out again. I don't know where they live when buildings are maintained but they seem to survive.
Hi Kingy
I have swallows at my house each summer and I just LOVE them! How amazing to have them up so close. I've had them fly in to my house before - circle the room and fly out again. Treasure them - they are the best.
All the best for the breeding season

Hi - they come into our house too usually through the open patio doors - always have done and we are a bungalow - we do allow them to nest in the sheds and lately they've taken to trying to roost in the evening in our sons bedroom - he asks them to leave just before dusk so they have time to find another safe spot for the night. I think these are possible the previous year's young who were bred in or around our garden and haven't yet found their own spot - last year two nested very late in the season having spend most of the summer flying in and out and around trying to work out which are barns and sheds and which are our living areas - maybe a tv in an old outhouse may be the answer to the 'tv addicts'! Other than that just look on it as a very great honour.

If you want to load up some photos, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see your swallow! when you start a post, there is a film reel icon at the top of the box, click on this and then browse to where your photos are on the computer, select the file, click "Open" and then click "Insert". Just make sure your photo file size isn't any larger than 4mb :-)
