I make up my own bird mix to scatter round the garden (no grow bird seed, peanut granules, suet pellets, dried mealworms and sunflower hearts). Will the sunflower hearts sprout,if they do I will keep them out of the mix and just keep them it in its own feeder.
It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.
Hello Madpenguin,
No, it shouldn't sprout as the husk has been removed. I believe hearts are included in most 'non sprouting' mixes. If I'm wrong, someone here will put me right I'm sure!

Hi there - I'm sure Marjus is right I only buy none sprout mixtures and they are always included in it and nothing has ever sprouted so far!
Hi again~I think the seeds in the no grow mix is heat treated and it is cut up,It is the seeds you have on thier own I was wondering about.
Its just that I have sunflowers coming up in various places and not sure if it is from the sunflower hearts I now use or the whole seeds I used last year.
Rachel
We have always used the sunflower hearts and have never had anything grow under the feeders.
I use sunflower heart chips. These are in the feeders next to the nyjer feeders. There is nothing else in the vicinity, but I have plenty of little seedlings sprouting under this feeding area. It must be nyjer if everyone above me on this thread is right!! Some are sprouting in a plant tub, so I will let them grow and see what they turn in to.
Cheers, Linda.

Interstingly enough last year, I had lots of sun flowers growing in my garden mainly under the bird feeders. Where would they be from, the black sunflower seeds, the striped sunflower seeds or the husk free ones? All of which are in my seed mixes.

Some time ago there was a similar thread. I have tried but can't find it. Norfolk Dipper posted a photo of his pole feeding station, totally covered with full height sunflowers, all flowering. There must have been in the teens of them, all clinging to and near his pole. He said they were all from sunflower seeds dropped from the feeders, and looked so lovely. I wish I could find it.
I was under the impression that most seeds were heat treated now and wouldn't sprout.
I feed the RSPB no mess sunflower mix and since I switched solely to that, I've never had anything grow. Its sunflower hearts, so presumably they have to be in husks to sprout, I suppose the mystery next is which one does sprout!
When I was feeding a different mix last year I had all sorts of things spouting underneath the bird feeders and in plant pots...although the biggest problem here hasn't been what's growing and more that the birds are killing the grass!
