My feeders on the washing line have now been subjected to several squirrel attacks, so I decided it was time to get one of those feeder poles and managed to procure one from a kind local Freecycler. However, I have no idea how to get it into the ground - any tips?! The ground is very dry and hard at the moment - shall I water a section to make it moist? Do you hammer the stake into the ground? Or twist it in?
Any help much appreciated :)
Hi several different ways if you are using a hammer to knock it in with it needs to be pointed first and a hole made with a iron bar assuming of course it is made of wood.you really need to put a piece of old wood on top of post while knocking it in to save it splitting and you will need a very large hammer.Another option if it is a square post is to get a spike that goes in the ground from builders merchants or d i y stores and then bolt it in but be sure to measure it before going to shop.Hope your birds appreciate the effort you are making.
Hi
The rspb shop does a great pole socket that just "screws" around into the ground, simple to istall and I have found it to be very sturdyhttp://shopping.rspb.org.uk/p/BirdAccessories/Spyra-Base_ground_socket.htm
