I have two nest boxes ,3metres up a 50' Beech tree. Great tits and Blue tits have nested there for years. As expected, they started again this year, busy in and out with nesting material, day in day out. Then ,for some unknown reason ,they have stopped. No sign of either of them . I can understand if one leaves the area, but both seems strange to me. I should add, that no one goes near that end of the Garden when nesting is going on. Its a good 30mtrs from the house. Any ideas what would cause this behaviour?
Hello railmad, sorry to hear of your abandoned nest boxes. I can only think that there has been an intruder to the boxes ( squirrel, mouse) or something has attacked the adult birds( maybe a sparrowhawk has even taken one of the adult birds) and frightened them off. I hope you see some action again soon.
hi railmad......
I ave had the same thing happen in my garden, sadly i dont think its a hawk problem but ya cant rule it out.. likely it to do with cover , food or they could have left because they found a better nesting hole ... you'll never know...
It could also be the lateness of them building....... tits reliey of catupillers to feed their young on.. if they get the timing wrong ( even by a few days) then the young would die ... which i think is the most likely answer here... remember we had a cold winter and then its carried on into this month also in some parts of the country...
dont just look enjoy and leave for others to share after you. we dont own the earth we just rent a small part of it....
