I must admit I am a bit late in coming to appreciate birds but now I have discovered them I must admit I am getting a bit obsessive with them...especially in trying to make my back garden into a bird haven! I just wanted to ask am I to late this year to put up a nest box or should I put one up anyway?
There's never a bad time to put up a nest box! Whether or not they'll take to it now is a different question - many birds are well into nesting by now, such as blue tits, who will have been prospecting for suitable sites back in February and March. However, other species have not started yet, such as sparrows.
Birds are always wary of new things in the garden so they will take time to 'trust' a new nestbox, so the longer it is up the longer they have to get used to it in your garden - they may investigate it now as a possible breeding site for next year or even a roost over winter.
You can find more information on nestboxes and nesting on the main website - http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/index.asp
