I don't want to get my hopes up but....
I just saw a sparrow sized bird eating on the berries off the Ivy. It flew and briefly landed on the top of a bush at the bottom of the garden.
This was the closest match:
But the breast was a bit duller.
Personally, really hope it was a bullfinch!

P.s: Can somebody show me a picture of a black cap in THEIR garden. As I thought about this too.
I may have already mentioned this, but, the main feature was the striking black cap.
Birding , Birding, Birding !

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!
This looks perfectly like the bird!
( But knowing my luck it was probably a sparrow! LOL)
If it was a Bullfinch it would have a squat black chunky bill for seed cracking. A Blackcap would have the finer "tweezers" of an insect eater. Also the Bullfinch white rump is so prominent it can be seen from space (well nearly).
Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?
Hi Coal
Here's a photo of a male Blackcap in my garden,
and here's a female Blackcap.
Hope this helps.

I have seen the birds lots again today and Im happy to say.....
IT IS A BLACKCAP!
It hasn't discovered the feeders. (Yet)
All it does is fly to the back of the garden into the cave of ive as i call it, and plucks the berries off and eats them!
But very happy with the new visitor!
