Hello - I have been watching and feeding birds in my yard for a few years now, but consider myself a novice. But this is the first year I have hung a nestbox. Two blue tits have showed an interest in the box over the past two days. I'm so excited!
However as I said I don't have a garden only have a yard about 150 yards long, surounded by a wall about 10 feet high. A 'resident ' blackbird loves to hop between the many pots I have. There are trees, bushes and ivy down one side of the wall, with feeders hung on them. On the opposite wall I have feeders hung. I hung the nest box high up above my kitchen window, I thought this the only safe wall to hang it on as the cat next door won't be able to reach it.
Now I am wondering if I will disturb the blue tits when I am in the kitchen. Also it's that time of year for getting out the power washer to blast the yard...will this frighten or disturb the blue tits?
I am surprised that I get such a variety of birds in my yard. I live a mile from the town centre but there is a park close by. Any advice will be very welcome. I look forward to posting on the forum in the future.
Hello wozatmz,
Regarding your kitchen window: Depending on reflections, the birds may or may not be able to see into the room. Two factors in window collisions are that the bird sees the sky reflected in the window, and, rooms with a window at each end, can appear as an open fly-through. As for your power washer: If you spend a lot of time in the yard, the birds will be used to you as a benign presence, and will carry on regardless. It's always best, however, to keep your distance from the nest.
Enjoy.

Hi newbie :)
I have a blue tit box 6 feet from my big kitchen window and they have ignored me completely for the last 7 years as they nest build and then raise their broods :)
S
hmmm that sounds like I have spent 7 years in front of a window..............

Thanks for your reply mickycoop.
The blue tits have been very busy back and forth all day. I went out this evening to sweep up and water the tubs. They sat in the bushes tweeting and keeping an eye on me. So I'm guessing they are gettting used to me being about. The nest is out of my reach, I had to get the ladder to hang it above the window. It's about 12 feet from the ground. (I'm hopeless at guessing heights and lengths, but my son reckons it's about that height.
thanks again
Maria

Hello wozatmz, and welcome.
My new tit boxes are currently being ignored, however the seed is going down well so thats good.
Hi Wozatmz,
If your yard is150 yards long it is bigger than my garden, and with trees, bushes and ivy down one wall and plenty of pots it sounds more like a garden than a yard to me!!
Welcome to the forum, and I look forward to hearing more about your birds, and especially your nest box. Good luck withit.
Cheers, Linda.
