Stock dove or Feral Pigeon?

Kezmo this one is especially for you.  There are about five of these that come into my mums garden and I thought they were just feral pigeons, but on looking at my BTO book could they be Stock Doves?

They are slightly smaller than the Wood pigeons and do not have the red eyes of the feral pigeons I get at home.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

  • Hi BBB

It's a bit of a lottery to be honest, so far OH has looked like Les Dawson, so has my brother in law and also my sister (!?!) - When I tried enhancing my own image, my first attempt I looked like Nana MIskouri!  Me thinks I need to hit the tutorials.

  • LOL Kezmo ... I think I'll stay as I am!

    Cheers, Linda.

    See my photos on Flickr

  • That must make for one interesting family photo lol, I'm messing about myself with photoshop at the minute, I don't think I could be without it now, I've downloaded the free trial version which at the end of the trial you can purchase  a licence to keep it, it's something I will definetly be purchasing, I'm very impressed with it.

  • Thanks for all of your replies.  Glad the BTO bird book was useful. I had never seen these before so was pleased to identify a newbie. I am now returned from Devon.  My feeders all looked empty. I had asked my neighbour to put out the ground food but thought the rest would last the 4 days.  Must have been busy in my absence.

I was pleased to see that my goldfinch numbers had increased to 4 and it was lovely and sunny,

Kezmo, I too have just bought photoshop (student edition)   http://www.1stoptutorials.com/  are quite good tutorials, but there are loads of them on line for all sorts of things.

Good luck and look forward to seeing some results.

    Thanks once again

    Sarah

  • Sparrow - I think that's probably wise! LOL

BBB I must say I'm getting to be really impressed with it, I've spent best part of today trying to crack it and there's still an awful lot I still need to learn.  I did tho find that photos I had already edited in other photo ehancing software don't work so good.  The birdy shots I have, most of which are pretty rank are turning out okay.  I took some shots of deer in the New Forest last year which have come up really well.  My hands aren't the steadiest and alot of my photos show that and this software has really helped.

  • HI Sarah

Glad you are safely home, your birds will be happy to see you if the feeders are empty!

Thanks for the link on the tutorials I will check them out later.

    Kerry.

  • Hi Kezmo,

I'm finding images that I crop are coming up brilliantly, you can crop them and blow them up large and they still look like quality images. It can be difficult zooming and keeping the camera steady, if I can I try to lean a hand or arm against something to help steady the camera, this can help alot to eliminate camera shake. I've been trying to get the deer my Mum gets in her garden but they disappear whenever I show up with my camera, she said she had three muntjac asleep in the garden the other day, it's so frustrating.

    hi Kezmo

You have been a busy person today, and I am glad that you are learning all new fangled software to improve the quality of your pictures.  I am considering using Gimp, but it is so much more complex to get the swing of in the Photo update department - at least it is free.

Sarah: You can try and before and after picture and see what the pictures looks like LOL {wildlife of course}.  I will look into the link you have supplied too.  Great news about the Goldfinches too.

Great to hear about the ID of the Pigeon

I have to say that Stock Pigeons are very attractive looking birds - quite dainty compared with Wood Pigeons.

    Regards
