I have just picked up a coal tit from the path outside my back door. I think it must have flown into the window as I can't think what else could have caused it to end up sitting on the path.
I have read the advice on the website and put it into a dark box hoping that it will be ok. I am now keeping my fingers crossed. Is there anything else I should be doing for it.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

Not for the moment - if it's let you pick it up then chances are your suspicions are right, and you've done exactly the right thing. Leave the box somewhere quiet for at least an hour then take it back to where you found it to release it. If it's in shock it probably won't be interested in food or water for the time being, but it may need something to give it some energy to get it on its way on release.

Thanks for that, I have done as you suggested and will check on it in an hour. Fingers crossed it will be ok, but Its pretty listless right now.
Oh, poor little coal tit :( You are doing the best you can by keeping it in a darkened place - as long as the box is ventilated. Keep the box in a warm, quiet area and check up on birdie every few minutes - if it is going to recover, it shouldn't take too long before it starts perking up - it will be obvious when it's ready to be released. If it does recover and you release it, ensure there is water and food available, and place it somwhere close to cover, and away from any sources of danger.
Good for you for caring for it, you will have a friend for life I'm sure!
Let us know how it gets on.
Oh I hope he survives Sarah, but you are giving him the best chance possible. I'll be watching your post for news.

I do hope he survives - he will have a worried mate somewhere. Well done for caring for him and doing the right thing, Sarah. I hope he appreciates your efforts and stays in your garden.
Cheers, Linda.

Do let us know the outcome Sarah. So glad you were there to help.
Great News! I checked on him and he was much more lively so I took the box outside and right next to where I had found him I opened the box and he flew away into the woods behind the house.

This was the coal tit after I picked him up and before his rest in the box
Bless your heart Sarah - hope he pulls through. Well done you!

Hi Sarah, well I hope he follows you back home at the end of your stay!
Brilliant news that he is OK.
A very similar thing happened to me a few days ago with a starling. He thudded into the window. I dashed outside and found him lying on his back with his legs in the air. I thought he was dead and went rushing inside to get hubby. By the time we went back outside he was on his feet. He fluttered off but banged into the hedge, then flew to the other side of the garden and banged into that hedge. We got a towel and carefully tried to catch him, but he was having none of it. He flew to the conifer and disappeared in the greenery. I waited and watched, he was quite still but alive, and after a short time he flew to the fat feeder and started to munch. I knew then he was OK. You should have seen the mark on the window - he hit it with wings outspread, beak first. He must just have been stunned, like your coal tit.
Hi Bramble
I'm so pleased that he or she has recovered and seems none the worse for his little accident.
Best wishes Chris
