Wilkos sunflower hearts

Just wondered whether anyone else has bought Wilkinsons sunflower hearts? I noticed the other day that they are very cheap, but because of this I am a bit suspicious (although surely sunflower hearts are sunflower hearts?) Desperately looking for a way to spend a bit less as the birds in my garden get through these remarkably quickly, but I don't want to buy these if they're no good.

  • Hi somethingofadreamer,

    Cheap is good!

I use them all the time simply because of the cost, I couldn't afford to use them at the price other retailers charge!

The Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Bullfinch and a number of other species that visit my garden all eat them as well as a whole mixture of other treats.

Wilkinsons have a really good choice of wild bird food, but once you have lots of birds visiting it is advisable to buy food in bulk.

There are a number of internet suppliers who deliver for free on orders over £20.00 - £25.00

  • Hi somethingofadreamer

there is nothing wrong with wilkinsons bird food, or from any other cheap store.

even the feeders are good, its a great place to start, get what you can afford. the birds will eat it just the same, all i say is try not to buy wild bird seed with corn, as it's not touch by most birds. :-)

Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

  • I have used wilko sunflower seeds in the past and they are ok, I find them to be a bit dry and brittle compared to better quality seeds.

The wilko seeds went down very well with all my birds during the recent arctic conditions.

I think its a case of you get what you pay for.  But my birds prefer seeds, to no seeds. :-)

  • Yes my birds prefer seeds to no seeds, but some are far better than others. The ones I buy from the market are quite dry/old/brittle where as the ones from RSPB are fresh and have a green tinge, Plumpness and green are a sign of good fesh SH's. Birds eat what ever seed i put out!

  • I buy my Sunflower hearts from wilkos and my lot like the robin mix from there too I find all the birds seem to like It ,so no waste.I bought their cheaper seed once, never again such a waste of money.I also purchase a lot of things from Pets at home.
