I thought I had a male and a female Pied wagtail visiting me, but after Sparrows post I'm not sure now, its very confusing, This one I'm sure is male, please put me right if I'm wrong.
And this one I thought was a female, that grey you see up the sides goes down the back too, unlike the other one which has a black back, but there is alot of black to her/his throat this is what is causing my confusion, I thought you could tell by their back colour but seeing Sparrows post this isn't the case, and as I've said I'm confused.

Pied Wagtail identification is straight forward if you get a good view. :)
The upper photo is a Male, it has a solid black mantle and rump. It's very monochromatic :) Females normally have a paler slate back that contrasts with the black nape.
The lower photo is a female- it is a particularly pale one- almost as pale as a White Wagtail- IMHO not enough white on the forehead however. Any pics of it from behind so we can make 100% sure of it?

not yet, but shall work on it, I have lots of them sitting on the garage roof facing me, they run around so fast I have a hell of a job catching them on the ground in the garden, the Male pic is the first time I've been able to get a clear shot of one of them, unfortunately the other one stayed on the garage roof and took off with the Male when he left.

I hope you get a definitive answer. I don't think mine are a pair because they both disappeared for several days and now the original one is back but no sign of the second. I think Squirrel managed to sort out that hers were a pair.

I agree with Seymour. The male that visits me is more distinctly black and white while the female seems to be a much greyer version.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
yup that second bird is a juv/ 1st winter bird :)
