Osprey Nest....... With Geese!!

Hello all.

this is my first post on here.  I am just wondering what the outcome will be, we have an ospreys nest in a tree on  a little island in the middle of a loch. The ospreys have been coming for a few years now and last year built the nest but, we believe the birds were still to young last year to breed but hopefully they will this year. Hopefully the Ospreys should be arriving in the next week or so........... but unfortunatly a pair of Graylags have decided they like the look of the nest and are looking rather comfy in it at the moment. Do you think the osprey will return and remove them from the nest or will it simply look for somewhere else? Any thoughts much apreciated. Thank you.

  • Welcome to the site Sundance. Hope you will enjoy your stay here.

I think we will all wait for you to answer this yourself ......... keep an eye on that nest!

  • I believe Geese will often try to claim a suitable nest but I think they almost always get the heave-ho when the Ospreys get back

  • Welcome sundance

I can't answer your question but will be interested to hear the outcome!

You may know this already, but if the ospreys do return and occupy the nest, I suggest you contact Roy Dennis of the Highland Foundation for Wildlife, who you may know has been the "prime mover" in assisting ospreys to recolonise Scotland since the 70's. This page from his website gives advice about nest reporting:  http://www.roydennis.org/Osprey/index.asp?id=89

Depending on where you are (and I wouldn't divulge this here) Roy will either get back to you direct, or put you in touch with his contacts in your area.

You might like to join the Loch Garten Ospreys group on this site, as well as following events at Loch Garten we exchange a lot of "osprey lore" (this applies to Pip too). Here's a link: http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/groups/lochgartenospreys/forum/default.aspx

  • Thanks for all your help, i live in a little village to the east of the glens, the loch is only a mile or 2 away. one goose is still up on nest and looks like it may be sitting on eggs, the osprey is due back any day now. I will keep you informed. Many thanks

Can I suggest you edit your post of today, and take out the place name in your location. You don't have to be an RSPB member, or registered here, to browse this board, and osprey nests are still sometimes raided by egg collectors.

With the tools available on the internet today, it isn't hard to track down lochs with islands on, in the area of (placename). I've just had a look on Google Maps, and spotted a few.

Just being cautious perhaps, but if we don't know where you are, you can feel freer to tell us how the story develops!

    Cheers, Sue C

  • I think they will soon depart if the Osprey turns up.

  • Osprey arrived this morning and was first seen at 08:55, we saw it again at 10:55 with a couple of crows following it................ and no sign of geese on nest!! Hopefully the mate will arrive soon too. :-)

  • Hi Sundance brilliant news! please keep the location of the nest a gaurded secret.

If there is a breeding pair, then ideally the nest should be monitored by people in the know!

SueC has supplied you with all the information required to hopefully safegaurd the nest.

As much as we all want to share this experience, but unfortunately in this world we live in there are a number of people who don't appreciate these magnificent birds and will either take the eggs or persecute the adults!

I'm sure you don't need to be told to keep your location away from the public and I don't want to insult your intelligence!
