Here is a picture of "Punky" one of my blue tits, he has lost most of his feathers on the top of his head - if you look very closely you can see just a couple of fluffy feathers sticking up. He is a real character, he flies to my hand for a mealworm but always chickens out about 2 inches away - One day hey ho

. Someone on the forum told me that theRSPB site has 2 servers so if you log off and log on again you might get the other server - if you see what I mean.

He looks although he has mites, and they have had a field day around the feathers on his head and around his eyes.
Does not do too much for his looks at all.
I am sure he will be alright just he looks a bit different that is all

I found this interesting fact on the website about birdseed and mites.
Yukky ... and I am now scratching at the thought here LOL
So I think we all have to be aware that bird mites are infectious to other birds, and they like to 'nip' humans too.
I do not think there is a known cure to the bird, and the bird has to remain as it is.
What makes me think of bird mites is that it is important to make sure our bird boxes are cleaned out so we do not contribute to the 'mites' population, or any other 'beastes' that infest birds.
The mites can live up to 3 weeks without a host so that is worth considering too.
Yes I took the pic this afternoon. He has been around for ages and has a bonny appetite!! He certainly seems happy enough but I do hope he is not suffering at all. Wonder if anyone out there can help?

I hope it is not the food, I buy a large bag about 20kgs from our local Farm supplier but it only lasts me 2 weeks at the longest. I have 17 various feeders (some peanuts and fat ball holders) all over the garden and fill them daily (twice on really icy days) and I hose the tables down twice a week and clean the feeders out about once every week to 10 days with disinfectant - takes me ages!! I have not seen anything moving and no I wouldn't put it in my freezer either!!!. I do keep it in an outside unheated conservatory so the frost would have got to it over the last few weeks.
He seems to be the only one with this problem, someone said he might have been in a fight? It is only his head that is affected, the rest of him seems ok.
