I hope you can see the image on my patio door, we just heard a bang, and didn´t realise where it came from until 10 minutes later. Firstly, what do you think it was, could it be a little owl caught up in a chase, and secondly, how do I stop it happening again, it could have killed it! Don´t say net curtains, I hate them! Thanks for looking. Garden Fairy.
Hello Gardenfairy, and welcome to the RSPB Forum
Little Owls are tiny and the bird in your picture looks a bit larger.
Wonder what the story was behind events.
Hope that the bird was alright.
Regards
Kathy and Dave

Hello Gardenfairy, I can't see your picture at the moment, but I do hope the owl was ok afterwards.
Hi Gardenfairy
Can see your picture, wow! it must have certainly hit it with a whallop - the outline of it's feathers and the full frontal of it's body is defined very well. Don't suppose it might still be in your garden somewhere nursing a headache? I really hope it's ok, poor thing.

Hi Gardenfairy, I can't see your picture, but am presuming a bird flew into your glass doors, to prevent it happening you could try some sun catcher stickers, or the stained glass sun catchers on your doors, I have some colourfull glass balls hanging along my patio doors and haven't yet had any birds fly into them.
There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
Hi Gardenfairy,
I can see the picture,It must have made quite a noise banging Into the window like that, I do hope that owl Is ok
Littleowl.
Hi,
I wonder if the wings arent too long and pointed for a little owl, also the eyes look too small. That said - I'm still trying to work out WHAT spp. it is :)

Yes, I thought it was a little large, but owl shaped head! I checked the garden, no sign of stunned bird anywhere. Thanks for the idea of suncatchers/ glass balls, will see what I can find. Sorry to those folks who couldn´t see the photo, my first attempt. Must go, the pheasant is calling and may land in the garden again.

Hello Gardenfairy,
Welcome to the RSPB community. Sadly birds and windows very rarely mix well. Some birds do collide with glass in the heat of a chase, but most do so because they see a reflection of the sky and trees in the glass, or because there is another window or mirror in the room making the bird think there is a way through. Double glazed windows tend to pose a greater risk than single glazed, since they produce clearer reflections.
Never fear, there is something you can try to help prevent the number of casualties! (don't worry it doesn't involve net curtains!) In order to make the solid surface of the window more obvious to the bird, I would recommend investing in some self-adhesive window stickers. These need to be stuck to the outside of the window and will help make the birds aware of the obstacle ahead. These stickers come in a variety of shapes and designs and some can be found below:
