Bird songs..... what are the best ways if ID-ing the birds

Hi there

I love my birds as we all do on the RSPB website

Yesterday I went for one of my 'long'  walks, and I focused 'entirely' on the bird songs that I could hear around me

There is an abundance of all types of tunes even if they are 'a few varations of the same song from the same bird'

There is a great area to help ID bird songs on the RSPB website and they are very useful to many people.

Still are there any further tips and suggestions on how to ID our bird songs would be appreciated.

Regards

    Hi,

I'm afraid that apart from  listening to the songs on CD in the car or while on the cycling machine at the gym

until you know them, or going out birding with someone who knows the songs,  the other way is trial and error. Hear a song you don't know? Track it down :)

    ;)

  • Hi Kathy,

as Seymouraves has mentioned there is no other way than to get a CD with certain species that you know you will encounter.

Ideally you will need a CD with song and calls on it.

I have included the following link to a web site that has virtually every species of bird song and calls.

Again there are no copyright or fees incurred for downloading the calls, you can listening to them before downloading them.

    http://www.xeno-canto.org/europe/

It is a very easy site to use, but if you have any problems drop me a note.

If you find a call that you want to save, move your mouse over the name and right click on it.

Left click on Save Target As, save it into a folder were you will find it!

  • Hi K, if you have an IPod or such like, download an app with songs and calls inc, that way you can test yourself in the field as you go.

There was a thread about this on gear guide, I think!

    John :-)

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
