I have been reading an old work book belonging to my great grandfather who was a carpenter and wheelwright in Andover in Hampshire in the early part of the last century. He lists one of his jobs as repairing a 'Cuckoo gate'. Does anyone know what type of gate this is? Is it like a kissing gate or something else,maybe a local name for a certain type of gate. I have tried Googling but no luck!

I have just found a Hampshire County council list of walks and it talks of passing through kissing gate and cuckoo gate in St Mary Bourne. Also found a cuckoo gate mentioned in Oxford, but neither say what the difference is. I used to live quite near to St. Mary Bourne and have been trying to contact a friend, who lives there, but no response yet. Will try again later.

cuckoo gate is probably an old Sussex name for a kissing gate :)

Cuckoo Gate, m. A gate which shuts upon two posts which are connected with curved bars, so constracted that only one person can conveniently pass through at a time, and for this reason called in Hampshire a kissing-gate.
Thanks seymouraves, My friend has just rung me and reminded me where the cuckoo gate is and confirms it is the same as the kissing-gate.
