Not seen one in the wild alas, but apparently they have a 1 metre (3 foot) wingspan which is quite large compared to their body size which is 32 cm (13" ). Barn owls are small! Little owls are tiny!! Was very surprised when I first saw one of those!

Hi Hawkbuzzard. If you have seen a Barn Owl, then it is a good bird to use as a comparison.
The Short-eared owl in about 1" bigger and has a slightly larger wingspan.
You will also be surprised how much they weigh, about 13oz.
Hope this helps!
Regards Buzzard

thanks. so they are quite big.
not yet see a Little Owl though, hope i do soon.
Owls arent really birds you just randomly encounter while birdwatching you have to go looking for them separately, same with Kingfishers really
Thanks Buzzard. Thats not very heavy at all is it

I have to disagree, I saw a short-eared owl while out for a normal walk with the dog :-)
They have very long wings!

Nope, saw the same owls a number of times while out walking actually lol There are also Tawny owls around here that are always heard but rarely seen and I know several people who regularly see barn owls while driving home from work! Though I haven't yet :-( But then that might be for the best lol
Couple of photos of a shortie :-)
WOW your in an Owl hotspot there. I hear Tawny Owls all the time near me but ive never seen one.
Nice pics by the way

I haven't seen any for ages, though since I tend to work late afternoon - evenings that could have something to do with it!
The tawny's clog dance on my aunts roof, at least that's what it sounds like they are doing! And they are supposed to be silent, tut :-)
