Enjoyed watching a feature on the Harris Hawk used at the Millenium Stadium to flush out the Pigeons. WAs not aware that they hunted in packs in the wild.
Beautiful Bird

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

They did that in the town that i live in! Hired a guy to make the pigeons go away using his Harris Hawk. But the Hawk flew away! I don't think it was ever caught...
Home again, home again.

Hi Bramble,
I also saw that feature on the One Show (with Mike Dilger). Yes, it has special advantages when they hunt such prey as reptiles and small mammals on the ground, which they often do. A pack can cover all exit points from low scrub/burrows when prey goes into hiding. They also share out their prey, for instance taking turns eating small items they have caught together, so that no bird goes hungry for too long. This all takes brains - they are rather intelligent and it makes them great to work with.
I agree - a beautiful and fascinating bird.

Seriously thinking about trying harder!
I saw this too and was going to post up something if no one else had... but I got caught up in the rugby (which is why the one show was on as I was waiting for the rugby to start!)
great article and nice to learn something!
what goes around comes around!

Hi Sarah
Thank you for that as the one show is not a program I watch so I would have missed that. The other thing is the camera people on both tv and films just blow you away. The shots even in that short news section are just amazing.
Robert
Thanks for details of the BBC One Show feature. I enjoyed watching the clip on the harris hawk.
Those Saguaro cacti that they land on in the desert are really spiny. It's a miracle that they don't hurt themselves.
Best wishes Chris

Hi Robert
Yes that cameraman certainly knew what he was doing. I loved the way he had the hawk flying straight into the lens of the camera.
