Stray egg on my driveway Devon

Hello! Today I found a small white egg on the ground in my driveway as my partner was driving out, I spotted when opening the gate, just before it would have been run over and squashed:( 

1. It hadn't been there the day before, and was on the hard stone paving, I tried to find a nest or indication of where is had come from but couldn't. I had to pick it up to avoid us running it over, otherwise I would have left it where I found it. The egg is about 2 inches long and 1.5 wide and totally white and quite translucent. I've kept it warm with me but I have no idea what bird it could be from and what to do with it! I was thinking of taking it to a bird rescue/sanctuary, is this the right thing to do? Does anyone know what bird it could be from?
