i was working by the mouth of the river arun in littlehampton west Sussex one of the fastest flowing tidal rivers in the UK when unmistakeably i saw a kingfisher flying low across the river and going into a hole in the concrete bank.what is it doing here? beautiful but an odd place for a kingfisher to nest i would have thought.any ideas why
Hi Sparky,
Kingfishers do fish in salt water so this is nothing unusual. Many will move towards the coast as ponds and rivers start to freeze over by some may remain throughout the year, which could be why the kingfisher you spotted is now at the coast. They are unlikely to be nesting at this time of year.
Hope this helps,
