I've noticed over the past week or so that there seems to be an increased number of flying insects but a complete lack of swallows and martins feeding on them. This is in the Staffordshire Moorlands in meadows by the side of a feeder stream and a river.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed the same thing and if there is any known reason for the lack of birds and increased insects?
Hi jgordon, I recently went to Dorset and I also noticed a lack of swallows, martins and swifts. From the train I usually see them everywhere. There were a few in scattered areas, but none around were I was staying although it was perfect territory for them.
I surmise that the harsh winter has affected the birds. Their numbers are down. This in turn will have left more insects to breed. Any one else think of another reason?
