Nest Building Time again..

Hello everyone, I just thought I would tell you all that the Blue Tits & Goldfinches have just started coming Into my garden to take nesting material that I put out for them. They are In & out all the time. I started out putting cushion stuffing out for them but the birds didnt take this. I then realised I have a sheepskin rug, I gave the rug a brush & put that out & they are taking It all the time. At this rate the rug will be very small Indeed. Its nice to watch & to know that Im helping them to build their nest. Oh, nearly forgot Ive been brushing my 2 dogs as well. I tell you something they are the best groomed dogs on the street.. LOL.

  • Yes it's great to see them. I put a lump of tumble dryer fluff out this morning, just to see what happened and a Jackdaw took it all straightaway and looked very pleased with himself. My friend has a dog grooming business and she is saving all the clippings for me now.

  • Hi Judi, Im watching the Blue Tits as I write type this now taking the fluff I put out, they have to dodge the neighbours cat which sits on the fence watching them, less than 8 feet away from them..

  • Hi Sean,

I put Bobby's hair out in a nuttery feeder (thread here somewhere) and the birds have been busy collecting it the last few days.  The sparrows now have a system going, one pulls it out and drops it and the others catch it - very clever!

Animal fur does seem to be the birds' preferred nest lining at the minute it seems - there are going to be some very warm and cosy nests about.

  • I'm very ashamed to say that I hadn't even thought about putting out nesting material but the sparrows have been having a whale of a time taking feathers from our chicken pen so I hope that counts?

We've got 6 hens two of which are Orpingtons which have "soft" feathers so I'm picturing young sparrows in very cosy nests lined with blue and black orpington feathers in the manner of a feather boa!!

    cheers

Why is there never enough time?

  • same as u Judi. I keep all the fluff from my tumble drier. I had it alll of last week in a feeder and stuck to shrubs. It all went. Will put more out tonight.  Noticed yeaterday at our 'local' reserve they had lots of fluff around feeding stations also.
