Tree Climbing Moorhens

Across the lake I could see a dark coloured bird in a Willow Tree,  on closer inspection I realised it was a Moorhen!

It was then joined by another tree climber!

It walked straight up this branch, I have never seen them climb before. I'm sure it is something they do on a regular basis!

Safe place to roost!

  • Great set of pictures. I have seen them climb before but never captured them so well

Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain.

  • I certainly have never seen it happen. Thank you for the fantastic photographs Buzzard, which prove the point. I guess it is one way to get out of the water.

  • Wonderful photos Buzzard and a fascinating subject. It would never have occurred to me that moorhens would do that. Something else I have learned. Thank you.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Birdwatcher

You must have been in the right place at the right time, just like me on this occassion.

Thankyou Brenda & Squirrel for your kind comments.

  • Lovely.  I didn't know moorhens did that, although I had heard of ducks nesting in trees.

I am used to seeing herons flying overhead, or standing on the river bank.  I was once perplexed to see one standing on a branch high up a tree.  I later read it is not unusual.  It makes you do a double take, though!

Which reminds me, I once saw a heron on the ridge of a roof of a neighbour's house, and one of my neighbours was terrified!  They live a mile from one of the country's main rivers, and a couple of miles from two lake-based nature reserves, and they'd never seen a heron.  Obviously they thought it was a pteranodon or something.

Or maybe they thought it was a stork, and were off to check under the gooseberry bush!

    Excellent pics once again Buzzard.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Great pictures

At Titchwell there is a small group of Moorhens that spend most of their time under the bird feeders, have often seen these perched in the trees with the House Sparrows, will agree with the other comments that the first time we saw them we thought they looked strange, not really the most graceful climbers and perchers.

  • Great pics Buzzard! Amazes me that they can manage to manoeuvre on fairly thin surfaces with those huge gangly feet!!

    Hi Buzzard

Great pictures Buzzard, and I have heard that Moorhens do climb Trees.

I wonder why as they are shaped wrong, and those feet are huge.

Good way to remain safe from any preditors though.

    Regards
