I was doing my dishes at the kitchen window this morning when I noticed some movement in the big oak tree at the bottom of my garden.
On closer inspection I realised it was my greater spotted woodpecker, I think its the same one as it was a female I had last year.
She does look worse for wear but who can blame her given the weather. She's since been back to my bird cake feeder twice. Hopefully she'll recover some weight and condition in her feathers before too long.
Seeing her has made my day! Now, if only my long-tailed tits came back......
Make me a coffee and put me in front of the kitchen window!
Hi Emma,
What a wonderful reward for doing your dishes! I bet your water went cold whislt you were watching. I'm really pleased for you, and very envious. They are such beautiful birds. I expect she will recover now the weather is getting better.
Good luck with the LT Tits.
Cheers, Linda.

I too am really pleased for you yet incredibly jealous! I'm sure since there's fat cake there it'll help her a great deal and she will be back.
Let us know how she gets on :o)
You're not going to beleive this...I just popped out to the garden to top-up some feeders before dark and i turned round to see a half-a-dozen LT tits sitting in the tree above my head!
This is defo my lucky day!!!!!
Crikey! This really is your lucky day!
Hope they stick around long enough to be counted in the Big Garden Birdwatch next week :o)
Lucky you Emma J ! Quick go & put tonight's lottery on whilst you are having a good luck spurt! :-)
Hi Emma
So please to hear about your Great Spotted Woodpecker.
That is a super surprise and makes washing up all worth it.
Hope that Mrs Great Spotted Woodpecker becomes a bit healthier and happier soon.
Keep us informed about her.
Oh yes love to hear about Long Tail Tits anytime! - yours, yes love to hear if they come back. {smile}
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Emma, our GS woodpeckers returned and the LT tits followed the following day. All still here. So I hope the same happens for you.
Thanks all! I'll let you know how she does - she's been back a few more times today, so hopefully now she's found me (and more importantly the fat cakes) again she'll bounce back soon :)
Hi Emma, that's great news about the woodpecker. I can imagine it made your day. I will keep my fingers crossed that your long tailed tits return as well.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
HI Emma, great news about your GSW. We've got one too in our area that has only been in once or twice so like you it would make my day if it became a regular visitor.
As to LT tits - I haven't got any so really envious of yours and others on this thread.
