Hello everyone,
I live between Lincoln and Scunthorpe. has anyone got any tips for me on where I could see Red Kites without travelling too far?
thanks in advance
Ladybird
Why is there never enough time?
They are quite prevelent in The Chilterns, but my geography is worse than usless, so I am not sure how far away from you that is.
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain
Red Kites @ Rockingham: The Red Kite is a rare majestic bird that was until recently extinct from England. Thanks to an ambitious and successful reintroduction programme by English Nature, RSPB and the Forestry Commission, Red Kites can again be seen in the sky above Rockingham Forest in the East Midlands
Not sure how near this is to you but think it's nearer than the Chilterns, My Geography also C..P!

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

Hi Ladybird
As Birdwatcher has said they are very common site in The Chilterns. I see them daily over my house east of Reading. However, that is along way from you.
Your best bet may be Yorkshire which is a lot nearer to you. I don't know the precise locations to see them but I think possibly near Leeds. I read somewhere that Eccup Reservoir may be a possibility.
Here's a link to the Yorkshire Red Kite site which may give you some information.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks TJ,
Leeds is only about an hour from me so I'll try it.
I've got some time off work at Easter, so I think that's where I'll be going!!
cheers
Thanks Sarah,
I don't get to go birding as often as i'd like as I'm on a bit of a budget and I don't really want to travel somewhere with absolutely no chance of seeing anything so these tips come in really handy!
Rockingham is a possibility for me though so you never know.
Hello birdwatcher,
Thanks for replying. I think the Chilterns are a bit far for me, but you never know!!
Hi Ladybird. I hope you get to see the beautiful, wonderful kites. I'm in Berkshire & see them most days - 9 last Friday - an amazing sight although I gather some see 13 regularly! They are often about 15/20 feet above as they zoom in to take garden scraps (not my garden sadly!) Also saw a baby one on Saturday following it's parents circling around. That was fantastic. I hope you let us all know whether you see them -I SO hope you do.
Hi Ladybird,
I live near rockingham, and i only need to look out of my window to see red kites, they fly over all the time.
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

I'm SOOOO jealous!!! Do you see them all year round? I'm staying with friends in Wiltshire for few days towards the end of August and I could make a detour to your area on my way back home and see if I have any luck. I will let you know if I see any this weekend tho. I'm off for a few days at Easter and I'm planning to drive up to the Harewood area (if funds allow) to try and see some there.
Thanks for the reply

Hi Janet,
I'm very jealous that you can see red kites so easily. I know they are spreading east but they haven't quite reached here yet!! Mind you, we now get Buzzards here regularly which was unheard of when I was a child (too long ago now). We used to go on holiday to cornwall/wales every year and it was such a treat to see them. Now I can see them over my house in Lincolnshire. Amazing. Maybe it's not too long until the red kites get over here...... I can hope anyway!!!
