Harnham Water Meadows Photos

Hi,

As the photos still don't show in my thread about Harnham Water Meadows I am posting them yet again here.  If you want to see the text it's in the other thread I'm afraid.

Fingers crossed these are visible to everybody.

Wonderful photos SB and congratulations on making them visible!

The lone gull is nice - is it a herring gull?

    Hi Sparrow,

Thanks very much.  No, it's a black headed gull just getting it's summer plumage.  (I think)

There were lots of gulls by the river and they all looked different but I am pretty sure they were all black headed gulls bar one which was a herring gull.  I'll post a few more pics later.  Don't want to push my luck!

  • Hi BB

Thank you, I'm pleased you like them.  I should have named them really but I was getting short of patience by then!  You pretty much got them all right by the way.

    1. Black headed gulls.

    2. Black headed gull just coming into it's summer plumage.  They don't have the black face in winter and the beak and legs are less red.

    3. Salisbury Cathedral - well spotted.  I just wanted to share a favourite view of which I never tire.

    4. Little egret.

    5. Treecreeper - They are quite difficult to see as their backs are well camoflaged but their underparts are creamy white so that helps.  Keep your eyes on tree trunks as you pass and look out for movement.  It's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack mind!

    6. Wren - wrens are very small, all brown and their tails stick up.  Dunnocks are more sparrow like and have a grey face and breast.

    7. Jackdaw

    Best wishes,

    SB

  • Thanks SB. I saw the white spots on his tail and thought Herring Gull. I have a lot of black headed ones here, but they are still in winter plumage. I am no expert in these matters, although herring gulls are hilarious when they talk - just like out of control laughter. You can't help but join in laughing with them!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • lol!  I always thinks that about ducks, well mallards anyway, with their " ha ha ha ha ha ha" as you walk past  ;-)

  • Yessss, I can see these, it didn't matter how many times I went back to your other thread they would just never show, fabulous pictures, the Tree creeper pic is fantastic, that deserves a very well done, I've never seen one in the flesh before, I imagine they would be quite difficult to get, Love your little wren. I had a walk in the woods this morning, the only picture I got was a Deer's bum disappearing behind a bush.

  • Thanks BBB, glad you've seen them at last.

It's disappointing when you don't see much on a walk.  They are probably all there you know, just hiding till you've gone.  Better luck next time.  At least you got the deer's bum ;-)

  • Thank you SB.

It was the little egret that really foxed me - people had mentioned it, but I couldn't find anything in your photos that seemed to fit the bill, since I was looking for a baby eagle.  As Homer Simpson would say: "Doh!"

Salisbury is a lovely cathedral - and your username was a bit of a clue too!!

    BB

  • Hi BB,

lol!  I don't think they have baby eagles at the cathedral yet.  An easy mistake to make though.

  • Beautiful photos SB. I am very envious of the Tree Creeper as I have yet to see one. Salisbury Cathedral, on the other hand, is an old friend I haven't seen now for a number of years. It still looks as magnificient as ever. Thanks for your perseverance in trying to share your photos with us. It was worth it!!!!!

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
