It's my daughter's 12th birthday soon. She's a very keen ornithologist, and she's asked for a pair of good binoculars. Before I start searching for a decent pair, I thought I'd better start by asking on this forum which you think is best: a spotting scope or binoculars?

Hi-
binoculars
They are easier to use, lighter, do not require a tripod and much more necessary in the field ;
A spotting scope can come later:

For advice about Birding, Identification,field guides, binoculars, scopes, tripods, etc - put 'Birding Tips' into the search box
I'd say a pair such as the RSPB Puffin 8x32 would probably be a good choice:)
She would need to try pairs out to make sure they suit her - before buying

I'll echo seymouraves advice.
There are RSPB reserves (likewise many Wildlife Trust reserves also) with visitor centres and shops attached, many of those will have optics on display along with staff to help and advise when making your choice.
