  • Lovely set ILR
Unlikely to be a Lulworth Skipper, as they are only found on the south coast, looks like a Large Skipper to me, from the markings (same as I saw at Slimbridge), and I'm not good enough to confirm or deny the meadow pipit :o)

Thanks for sharing your lovely day out :o)
  • Morning ILR, looks like you had a good trip to St.Aidens and good to see the birds as well as the bees and butterflies, weather seems to be improving now so hopefully more insects on the wing including the butterflies and dragon/damsels.

  • Thanks for the ID Of the large Skipper butterfly PB
The photo of the meadow pipit was not great it was perched on a mound and wouldn’t turn around I tried to take a photo of it from a different angle to try and get the front of the bird but it flew off before I got into position.
It was well camouflaged sat on top of the mound and being such a small bird 30m away the photos of it were not great. With it being the only small bird that I had seen I decided to include it. It was a nice warm day and I was surprised that there wasn’t more butterflies about but I had not seen a large Sklpper before so that made up for it.
  • Thanks Hazel it was a nice afternoon and it was just nice to be out and about, St Aidans is a great place and there is lots to see and some nice walks. There is always something different to see every time I visit.
  • Re the pipit.... I wouldn't have known which it was from any angle, unless it was doing a cancan singing I'm a Meadow Pipit, and showing me it's huge hind claw Joy
  • A lovely set of photos ILR, and the landscape ones show the area off nicely, and the blue sky as well.

  • Thanks Mike I was heading back to the car park when I took the landscape photos it’s amazing where the time goes when you are there. I arrived at around 14.30 and got back at the car park at 1830, It was a nice afternoon and three RSPB guys told me that an Osprey had been seen there last week. It just shows you anything is possible at St Aidans ?.
  • Looks like another good day out. As already said that butterfly is probably a Large Skipper. I had a look on the YNU pages and there does not seem to be a confirmed sighting  of a Lulworth  Skipper in Yorkshire

    Pete

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • Thank you Pete, Thanks to PB and yourself i have the right name now.. I had looked in my collins book of british butterflies and I had mistakenly Identified it incorrectly. Yes i was only there from 14.30 to 1830 and i was lucky to see it in a bush while i was taking a photo of a bee, there wasn't much activity with regards the butterflies but hopefully as the weather gets warmer things may change in that direction. But to be honest any time spent at St Aidans is great for the scenery alone and the wildlife is a bonus.
