Hmm, yes, I saw that today as well. Any improvement in image quality has got to be miniscule, so it'll all come down to just how much lighter the new lens is. Can't see the new weight yet (well, for the 600mm anyway, which I'd be interested in), but I'm not immediately fussed at the announcement.
What's far more interesting is the announcement of Canon's first full frame mirrorless, only a few days after Nikon announced similar. Full frame and bonkers AF make it a fascinating evolvement. Details are a bit basic as yet, but fun times ahead.... And a bargain at a mere £2350 :-)
(Well, relative to the £13k 600mm!!!)
