Hi,
as I'm relatively new and wasn't here last spring I have a question.
Do we have / have we had/ is it worth having a message thread where we post in our first returning migrants?

I reckon kick off with a thread about march 15th as the first sand martins and wheatears start to arrive. Although it'll probably go quiet til early April depending on how stuff moves through.
Might be an interesting experiment. :))
Hi S,
Yes I think the middle of next month is a good starting point!
The other thing we all need to be aware of is depending on the weather some birds arrive as early as end of Febuary - 1st of March.
I have looked through some old reports on Bird Atlas and when the Migration Watch website was in use during 2002 to 2004.
It makes very interesting reading as to when certain migrants arrive!
For all those who are interested I have found an old list from the BTO migration watch website this can be printed out, so you have a paper copy.

Please note if you do want to submit any of your sightings to the BTO you will need to use the Bird Atlas site.

This link is to the BTO main homepage, were you can find other surveys and information.

Buzzard, you really are so helpful. I have already printed them out.
I am not sure I understand. Would the list not start with the' first sighting', and so we can't talk of a' certain date' ?
As Buzzard says, some birds arrive earlier than mid March.
Sounds like a great idea to me! Won't be long until some of the migrants will be on their way back!
Millie & Fly the Border Collies
A wheatear was reported a week or so back , up here in Norfolk.
No doubt I'll miss the return of the swifts again, I was away on holiday when they came back last year and I'm going to be on holiday the same time this year! I love watching for the swifts return too!
Ring Ouzel sightings have already been recorded for last month as S mentioned a Wheatear also!

Cornwall and Wilts been the hot spots!
I have attached some new links to Sexing & Ageing some of the migrants that will be arriving in the next few weeks.

Hopefully this will help some of the new birders to identify these visitors.
