Little egret

Hi all

Just back from four days in Sussex, spotted two little egrets at Cuckmere Haven, a first for me. Are they common? When I spotted the first one it was only about 30 yards away, but my camera was in the bottom of my rucksack. By the time I got it out he was gone! This photo is cropped from a long distance shot.

Also saw several pochard. Are they common on the south coast? Also saw many waterfowl that I couldn't identify - not experienced enough yet!

  • According to the RSPB you are more likely to see little egrets on the South and East coast, especially Poole and Chichester harbours. I have never happened to see them at Chichester but on the Dee Estuary in the North West. There are large numbers of pochard which over winter here. Sounds as if you had a great day.

  • Hi Albert

Little egrets are one of those birds which seem to be spreading all over the country. I see them from time to time at my local nature reserve in Berkshire.

It's always annoying when the camera is not to hand but it's still a nice shot.

If you've got any photos of waterfowl that you can't identify there are always people on this forum willing to help.

    Regards

    TJ

  • we've had loads of little egrets around the solent and poole harbour for several years now. they are elegant little birds and a welcome new resident. we can tell they have become more at home as we've noticed several boats now called little egret!

  • I live in Cornwall and they are one of the more regular sightings for me, really quite common, and all year round. In suitable sites I see as many little egrets as grey herons. This has been the case for several years. I even saw one flying over my town centre last week.

  • Hi Albert

NIce shot of the egret.  I live in North Essex where snow is not really common for us as we live on the coast but last week was a different matter - we had loads.  Me and my OH in our wisdom took a walk to the backwaters near where we live during a blizzard and even though our field of vision was somewhat limited because of the driving snow, we saw a Little Egret combing a stream not far off from where we stood and then fly off with a frog in its mouth - couldn't get a photo unfortunately as the wind was too strong.

  • We get them in Shropshire! We had 3 at one time at Venus Pool although there were 2 that were there for months!

  • Lovely shot. I don't think they venture this far North

  • Got to see my first Little Egret today on the banks of the River Lee nr Wheathampsted in Hertfordshire :)

  • They are known to  come North, I've seen them at Vane Farm and at Montrose basin in the frozen north :-) plenty to see at Lieghton moss along with Great Egret from time to time.

    John :-)

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Hi all,

I took this photo back in October 2008, they were on the backwaters near where we live.  That's Harwich you can see in the background

Sorry old camera so not as clear as I might have liked.
