My wife swears she spotted a woodcock in our garden day before yesterday.
The bird spent a long time probing for worms in our lawn through the snow/slush. Having read about the bird subsequently being secretive, this seems a fairly unusual occurance?
As we live close to Blackpool i assume the bird was having a stop over to refuel and heading West to ireland to escape the weather?
Wish I'd seen it.
Hello Glyn and welcome to the RSPB Forum
I would not be surprised at seeing a Woodcock in your garden,
There has been one reported on this Forum
Have your got any pictures by chance
That would be the best way of ID-ing your bird
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Hello Glyn
As Blackbird says another contributor had one in the garden and managed to get a photo. After a bit of digging I managed to find the post. Here's the link:

Show this to your wife to see if she can recognise it.

Hello Glyn and welcome to the forum.
He may come back again if he found some good food on your lawn.
Cheers, Linda.

Welcome Glyn, how fantastic to have a woodcock visit. It would be great to see any photos if (s)he returns to your garden.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hello and well done on seeing your woodcock and I hope you see it again. We had one in our garden before Christmas but it has never returned.
