Pied Wagtail in Hampshire 06/01/10

Hi - I joined today because I would like to share my pictures of a lovely pied wagtail...very friendly and posed for some time outside my window.

I do hope that I have got the right breed, but cannot link it to any other.  I havent seen him/her for two days now....he is a loner and I had read that they gather in large groups?

I also saw a song thrush yesterday but did not get a photo.

I would be pleased to have anyone's comments?

  • Hi Squirrel,

Thank you for those photos. You were really lucky to get them together and I think they are lovely. The snow adds an ambiance. Congrats and well done. Beuatiful little birds. I wonder if it is very rare to have the two together in a garden.

I have to report I haven't seen mine for several days. I will get booted off the committee!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Tony, thanks for viewing my photos. I was wondering whether they would continue to visit because I am not really supplying their preferred food of insects which they catch while flying. I know they are eating the mealworms and the pied now goes onto the table but I haven't been able to yet see what he is eating when he is on there. Over the weekend I hope to get a small bag of the suet pellets with insects in to see if they will eat those as well. If so I stand a chance of retaining their company for a little longer at least.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Sparrow, glad you liked the photos. They are not the best in the world as it was snowing lightly when I took them and the camera wasn't quite sure what to focus on - and I didn't dare delay long enough to change the settings! Sorry to hear your pied hasn't been around for a while. My two have been around again this morning but they aren't coming non-stop as they had been since the weekend. I guess with the thaw setting in, all sorts of goodies are becoming available to them. I hope yours returns soon as they are lovely to watch.

  • Hi Squirrel,

When mine first arrived, he was eating seed, either dropped from the table or by me. He came back to the same spot every day, and I put some meal worms down for him. I don't know if he got those before the other birds ate them all. He did move to the front garden, which has less birds, but I couldn't see what he was eating. I would imagine he would eat mealworms, and the insect flavoured suet is a good idea.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Squirrel, they are truly lovely photographs. they look as though they could be talking to each other in a couple of the shots. I am jealous. Thank you.
