Redwings

Hello there,

On the 22nd December we had a flock of Redwings ravaging our Holly tree at the end of our drive; one of them is ringed with an orange ring on it’s left leg and a blue/ grey on it’s right.

We thought that you might be interested.

  • I was amazed to see about 10-15 redwings in mine and neighbouring gardens this morning for about an hour and a half - amazed because I live in south-east London (Forest Hill).  I eventually put some chopped apple out for them as recommended by the RSPB (and some other things on a dish) since there's not much out there for them but they've moved on. The robin is enjoying it though.  Let's hope they come back.

  • Hello Greycellsgone. Congratulations on the excellent photo of the redwing.

I'm posting for the first time. The reason - here in suburban Wimbledon I have been watching 8 redwings (and our usual three resident blackbirds) gorging on the berries in our pyracantha hedge for the last three days. Never seen a redwing before. I reckon there are enough berries for another three days, then that's it!

  • I'm so excited as there is a flock of redwings in my garden in South East London at the moment. Didn't even know what they were- have never seen them before so had to google and find out. Thanks for the tip about the apple. I'm going to cut up one now for them as I see they are vulnerable to the cold and it's so snowy at the moment.

  • I live in very urban North London & for the last 2 or 3 days we've had an enormous flock of redwings (with a few fieldfares mixed in) descend on us & strip the berries off our street trees!  I've lived here for over 30 years and this is the first time I've seen anything like it in my area.  One advantage of the icy weather - I can watch these beautiful birds from my window!

  • Hi,

I am stupidly (!) so excited as I've just seen my very first pair of Redwings in my garden. They appeared yesterday amid the deep snow, and today are taking advantage of the thaw and feeding on the remains of last autumn's fallen apples. As it hardly ever snows/sticks here in the warmer urban/suburban city, I'm guessing the severe cold of this winter is the reason they have appeared in our hedgerow. I live on the west of the city of Cardiff in South Wales, and although there is usually an abundance of all sorts of wildlife here - including one year a ginger badger, snakes, foxes, resident robins and a sparrowhawk which grabs the woodpidgeons out of the tops of the garden trees - I've never seen Redwings before, in over 20 years of living here, hence the daft excitement, and wishing to share this with the community forum here.....   Fantastic!

Just hope I haven't now got 'hooked' on birdwatching!!

Isn't the RSPB interested in keeping a count of these type of birds? After all, they are listed as on their 'Red List' of endangered/declining bird species - does anyone here know how to submit this data?

  • Hello and welcome JB,

Your excitment is understandable ;), and you are hooked now ! lol ! I'm sure some1 will post a link for you if there is 1 for the data... i know that there have been many sitings all over the country even here in Newark, East midlands as i had my first redwing today... hope to read more of your posts in the future.
