Redwing is back

Morning all

The Redwing is back and has brought three friends with him this morning.

I thought the goldfinches had gone, but three of them (there are seven) were on the feeder at 9.30. All the birds are feeding pretty hard, obviously due to the bad weather. We do have snow now.

  • That's good, although on the other hand, they'll clear the berries even quicker with four of them! Good to know the 'goldies' are about too!

  • Redwings are really stunning looking thrushes and with the weather the way it is at the moment, more and more of them will venture into garden settings in search of food and shelter...so watch out for more! Redwings love berries, fruit and seeds. I always pop out some chopped up apples and pears for them which they have to share with the local Blackbirds.

  • We put out some chopped up apples on our birdtables for our regulars last week. The Starlings eyed it very cagily, trying not to go too near to it in case it bit! Then along came Mr Blackbird. Result, I thought. Well, not really. He carefully picked up each piece and slung it off the table so that he could get at the berry suet pellets! How picky can you get!!!

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • There are 13 this morning, obviously word is getting around!

I have put out some chopped apple on the feeder tray and around the bottom. Blackbird is very happy with that, but then again, so is my dog.  Just been out to buy some berry suet pellets and to stock up on other birdie treats. The berries are still on the Cotoneaster, but not for long me thinks.
