Visited a local quarry yesterday and was very pleased to see :-
They were back in numbers, noisey and all competing for nest holes.

Excellent news Claire .... and well done for the photos. They are far too fast for me.
We have a colony here on our river bank. They come back every year.
Cheers, Linda.

Well done Claire
Linda , check out the artificial Sand Martin bank at Brockholes. Not too far from you I think.

Thanks Galatas. I will do that when I go, but our river bank colony is only a 10 minute walk!!
Our nearest Sand Martin colony is also only 10 mins. walk away, last year at this time at least 40 nest holes were occupied but when I went down yesterday I could only see 3 or 4 birds and no sign of the nest holes being cleared out, just hope the birds are only late and not missing. If they start brooding late there is little chance of the 3 broods we sometimes get.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
I think we actually arrived at the nesting site at the same time as the return of the martins. We stopped off and watched for about 20mins on our way to a walk. At that time we saw only one solitary bird. About two hours later we stopped off again and suddenly a group of 25 - 30 appeared together. They were so excited, I think they had just arrived home - very late for them.
