We saw our last sighting of both Housemartins and Swallows last Monday 28th September flying above our garden - only a few of each but they had been around every day up until then. Since then nothing so assume that was their goodbye to us. (Shrewsbury area)
So, I guess, that is it then - summer is officially over until next year. When I was a kid, I recall birds such as the swallows and house martins used to congregate on telephone wires prior to their departure but I've not seen that for a good number of years. Mind you, telegraph poles are a rarer sighting these days as well. Another "tool" the birds usefully employed which seems to be disappearing.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
We still have our house martins (Shawbury) and Tuesday 29th morning on my way to work, I turned a corner and was faced with anything up to 50 swallows all swooping down into the (fortunately quiet) road). I drove through very slowly and they moved over into the field...

It is not over yet, It is raining but only a little. The sky today is full of both house Martins and Swallows they keep gathering on the wires (we still have e'm here, in the back of beyond) and then taking off again all at once!
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
So pleased to hear they are still around - funny how one area has them and not another maybe our food supply has dried up! Perhaps one of you has 'my' birds!
Hi all
