Autumn movement

It seems as if the autumn migration of waders is well under way going by the number of birds passing through our area.On both a working quarry complex and a nearby reserve we are getting reasonable numbers of what I think is the most elegant of waders, the Greenshank. We have been getting good views of these birds on most visits recently as well as Wood,Green and Common Sandpipers,Dunlin (many still in partial breeding plumage),Ruff and one or two rarities like Pectoral Sandpiper. For those of us lucky enough to get out and about it is worth keeping an eye out on any muddy patches for passing waders no matter how far you are from the coast.
