Osprey Autumn 2009 migration (from Scotland, unless we uncover some from ?).

The migration is well under way, so here is a list of birds to follow, with the latest position as I know it, from websites.....the list may be incomplete, so if you can please help, add any tagged ospreys that we can follow. So far in 2007, 2008 and 2009, we have not had any simultaneous fixes, I.E. two birds in the same place at the same time. Although visual sightings have been made of pairs or groups of ospreys.

RSPB, Mallachie, Sept 3rd, Hewell HM Prison, near Tardebigge, assuming she stayed there until this morning.

RSPB, Rothes, Dr Jones' sturgeon farm, Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde, Sept 2nd. (both as per this diary entry).

HFW, (Roy Dennis), Beatrice, Malagon, Spain, on the move, 11AM, 2nd Sep.

HFW, Talisman, fishing at Findhorn Bay, 1st Sep.

HFW, Nimrod, fishing at Culbin Bars, 1st Sep.

HFW, Morven, flying from Caithness in direction of Findhorn Bay, 1st Sep.

If past experience is followed, then Beatrice should over-winter at Guadiaro river which is 340 kilometres further on. Nimrod from memory was in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau last year and had a favourite river with mudflats and Morven was on the Atlantic  coast, in Mauritania and appeared to be spending every night in the desert. There were no trees where she was, so she was either on the ground or up on some rocks. Have I missed anyone? There may be some Scandinavian tagged birds this year.

  • Oh goodness. It's 1.33am and I've spent the last 3 hours trying to sort the straps of a dress I need to take away with me on Wednesday. I'm tired and I'm fed up. Laptop was still on where I abandoned it so I came in for a quick look before crawling upstairs to bed and what do I find? Some more truly wonderful photos of Mallachie. Thank You Thank You Thank You. I absolutely LOVE the one of her looking down at you. Superb. I'm now off for a cry....it's all very emotional.

    Thank you :)

Make the most of today because, unlike Sky+, there isn't a rewind button.

  • Xalbai - fabulous photographs.  Really great to see one of "our" ospreys after they have left the UK.

xalbai-- if you send the  information to Richard at Loch Garten he can ask Roy Dennis ( who puts on the tags)  where the  bird with a ring "MN"  is from and  other  facts about it.

If your friend still has the picture  both Richard and Roy Dennis would love to see it.

  • Hi Xalbai, As BJ has said Roy Dennis should know as he keeps these records. The colour of the ring would also help, if available. There is another of Roy's tagged ospreys on it's way, presently in the north of England, well it was yesterday, It is RED 8T. Link to Roy, which you have already, I suspect.

  • Hi Xalbai,

About the fishing - this is from another UK site, Rutland Water Ospreys:

"Adults are successful about once every four dives, but it takes the inexperienced juveniles many more attempts before they are successful. Ospreys hunt for fish in both salt and fresh water."

As others have said, we don't think Mallachie had tried to fish at all, before she left Loch Garten on  29th August. So, the unsuccessful attempts you saw were normal, at this stage. Sue C.
