Amazingly, I got my first sighting of a Brambling in my garden this evening.I thought they would have left for Scandanavia by now. When do the set off back?
There are 9000 species of bird on earth. Let's keep it that way.
I've got no idea but I've got at least 2 hanging round all day in my garden every day. They show no sign of shifting, & I am on the south coast so a long way from Scandinavia. They're going to have to shift if they want to go north to breed. I don't mind if they hang around though !
I agree Bella. They add some beautiful colour to the regular visitors. This Global Warming is sending everything crazy. I am looking forward to my first Vulture on the peanut feeder :)
Hi-
many winter visitors are on the move now but passage will last through to late April for some birds- I see Fieldfares in Norfolk in May some years. I often see Bramblings to mid April or even early May occasionally- just a few odd stragglers.

Thats quite interesting Seymour. They must not hang about with the breeding business if they only get back home in May.
only late birds are left in May- most are gone by late March :) But spring obviously arrives later farther north
I was wondering about this as I still have some bramblings here in Jersey. Do you think they may also have some sort of 'weather monitor' because while we were basking in 18 C yesterday, my brother in Norway was moaning about more snow and freezing temps.

I'm still enjoying a few in mid-Devon:-))
It's quite amazing how birds can read the weather. Just look at all the Waxwing still being reported.
Any breeding males will be v lonely further north, due to the nos of females still in my garden.
They have been wonderful company over the winter, with 40+ most days since Nov - down to perhaps 8/10 at the moment. Really hoping they will remember us when they return!!

Wow Osprey. What are you feeding them to get so many? I thought I had done well to get one.
