A probably Canada goose flypast

Hi everyone

Well it was at 2321 hrs 20/01/11  that I went outside my front door to have a smoke. I was so lucky in timing, as a typical wing of geese overflew my house, maybe 40 or 50 of them. They were very noisy, and I cannot be sure what they were as it was dark, but I'd bet Canadas. Is this rather odd? Don't geese land for the equivalent of a goose type snooze at night? Perhaps they were lost, or is this the first of a migratory move? I am just outside Colchester, in Little Bentley, towards Clacton. We get lots of geese around in the spring and summer, but I have never before seen any fly at night, only at dusk sometimes. I would be very interested in any comments, and illumination.

regards

  • Hi Spencerman49, a warm welcome to the forum.

I'm not an expert on high flying geese but I have heard them flying at night and they sounded like Canada to me.  I am sure some of our experts on the forum will answer your question fully.
