I LIVE IN A TOWN CALLED KIRKBYMOORSIDE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE. THE TOWN IS ON THE EDGE OF THE NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS. I BEEN WATCHING A FLOCK OF WAX WINGS ( 21 IN NUMBER ) FOR THE LAST 3 DAYS THAT HAVE BEEN FEEDING IN A HEDGE ROW THAT BORDERS THE OLD RAILWAY STATION. THIS IS A FIRST FOR ME IN TWENTY ONE YEARS. DAVE
The RSPB entry for Waxwings says that there are probably less than 100 of them which over-winter in the UK. However, I counted a minimum of 50 in Welwyn Garden City (Hertfordshire) town centre on Tuesday 11th Jan, so it seems likely that, with the 21 seen in North Yorks at the same time, the number here this year is much greater.
I live in Hertford (Hertfordshire) and have seen several large groups of waxwings over the last few weeks, 27 in Balls Park, 70+ in Bengeo, 20-30 in Tanners Crescent, Focus car park and Tesco at Hatfield I saw 60ish. My brother who is in his 60's has seen 5 in his lifetime, so I feel very privileged to have seen so many this year, stunning birds and I love that trilling noise they make, I don't want them to go!
Wow every ones seeing them!!!!
last week I saw 77 and a friend says there are loads up in Yorkshire
Happy birding!
