Hi red bird
Just noticed you have added 2 posts at one time (one of my senior moments)
Well done with the 40 Waxwings in your back yard
Have you got any photos of them by chance?
Hello
Just new to this, but have found out that the 60+ birds in my back garden were waxwings.
They hung about swooping into local bushes for over and hour,
Where do they come from, why in Bradford???
Wow, fantastic photo, Finches :) Zoom in to see them in their full glory, folks.
They come from Scandinavia and further east. There's been a poor berry crop there this year so they have been forced to move further away from home to find food. This is called an 'irruptive' movement (sounds painful...). The first signs that we were due for a big Waxwing winter came in late autumn when shedloads of them arrived on Fair Isle and elsewhere in the Shetlands - check out this blog post: http://fair-isle.blogspot.com/2010/11/waxwings-oct-25th-2010-day-well-always.html. In due course much of the UK was invaded, though northern and eastern parts have naturally got the biggest numbers. They will go wherever they can find a good load of berry-bearing trees (which is why they often show up in towns and gardens - they love ornamental Rowan trees) and when they've eaten the lot they'll move on :)

Hi Red bird
I was notified yesterday that waxwings were gathering at the Hyundi garage just off Ponty Road.
Glad you have seen them.

Great picture and glad you've seen so many.
Aikia has put a thread on with a good explation. They are turning up all over the place this year.
They've been in Leeds and surrounding area for a few weeks now.
