Waxwings in Lancashire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was reading our local weekly rag at lunch time yesterday, only to see that a flock of waxwings had turned up on a village green less than 2 miles from my house, near Clitheroe in East Lancashire. The flock had been sighted last weekend, and the village innundated with people with cameras. Needless to say they have now gone, and I knew nothing about them and missed them. How sickening is that? But how brilliant they have travelled so far west, and now my eyes are peeled.

Cheers, Linda.

  • What a shame you didn't hear about them sooner. Still at least you know they are around and spreading from Scotland.  Only about 200 miles to go before they reach me.

Hi Linda as you know I was fortunate to see a good flock today.

The best advice I can give is find out were your local bird club is, speak to folk on a regular basis if you can.

I would also suggest you keep checking your local bird club forum, not sure were you are! There must be birders local to you who post their sightings?

I'm fortunate that the Teesmouth Bird Club is a very active bird club and has many birders who post sightings on a daily basis.

The other thing is knowing your patch well enough to determine were the birds might turn up. Rowan berries are their favoured food, but they will eat many other berries and crab apples.

    Keep looking and listening.

    Regards Buzzard

  • Thanks Buzzard,

I have been Googling like mad but haven't found anything useful. I shall keep trying and will do a tour of the area this weekend - providing it ever stops raining.

At least they have spread across the country.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Sparrow

Thanks for the update, but if you could have a word with them and just say "GET DOWN SOUTH" I would appreciate it very much ;o)

  • Hi Linda, just a note regarding areas to check.

    http://heyshamobservatory.blogspot.com/

Heysham observatory could be within your distance of travel or surrounding area's.

There has been numerous sightings according to the blog.

  • Thanks for that link Buzzard,

Funnily enough we are heading up in the direction of Heysham next weekend. It's about 50 miles further north in the Morecambe Bay area. We have a whole week up there. Meanwhile, my ears and eyes are open and I have my figers crossed.

If I see any I shall be sure to point some in a southerly direction!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • First sightings of Waxwings have been reported in Berkshire. A flock (well 5 actually) were seen near a parade of shops on the outskirts of Bracknell. Might go out scouting for them tomorrow..
