Waxwings

About an hour ago I saw a tree full of waxwings. I'm about 20 miles north of Inverness. First time I have seen them in this area.

  • Lucky you jinty. They are fabulous birds.

There seems to be a bit of an influx of Waxwings at the moment and several of us have spotted some too. (not me though, unfortunately)

Look in the Migration forum for more information on Waxwing sightings

  • I seen one (yes just 1) waxwing today for the first time.

we were driving through inverurie (aberdeenshire) and waiting in traffic when I looked out the window to see a waxwing in a tree on the otherside of the road. He happend to catch the corner of my eye, and was instantly recognisable by the crest on its head.

hope to see more and a better time.

  • This is my first post so apologies if I get it a bit Pete Tong.

I opened the curtains to my bedroom this morning to be faced with a Rowan Tree full of birds which we subsequently identified as Waxwings.  I'm in Stonehaven.  It's the first time we have ever seen Waxwings in our garden, what beautiful little birds.  Sod's law, my camera was downstairs and by the time I got it, changed lenses etc and got back upstairs, they had legged it to a tree way across the brae.

Ah well, at least we saw them!

    Hi MarkM,

Welcome to Communities, must echo what Al said...very smart indeed. What a fabulous sight to discover on opening your curtains. We had waxwings reported here at the Lodge last week, but they seem to have disappeared and I dipped out. You are very lucky to have seen such beautiful birds up close.

  • Al,

thats cool seeing a red kite in the city.we saw two yesterday soaring not too high above a field out past Garlogie. This was my first time seeing them so close and i am amazed at the size of them compared to the buzzard.

The sparrowhawk was back in my garden last friday looking for his dinner, perched on the fence between us and the neighbours and stayed long enough for richy to get a good photo.

But as for waxwings i will be content with my one until my next day off when i will be looking out for more.

  • Just seen a large flock of waxwings outside my bedroom window this morning. I live in kendal Cumbria. Never seen one before so very pleased to have done so.

  • A felicitous note for a first post mouse. Welcome to the RSPB Community.

Waxwings remain my most significant "bogey bird" so I'm pretty determined to find some this season. Rowan trees in supermarket car parks always seem a good bet.

Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?
